The dormancy clause (2. [c]) of the Gafta contract addendum no. 76 states that:
“If loading of UK and/or Irish new crop grain is effected before 1st November, the test for germination shall be made no earlier than 15th November, or if effected on or after 1st November, not earlier than two weeks after completion of loading, unless a Committee appointed by Gafta shall decide by 14th November that due to the condition of the crop these periods shall be further extended. In all cases, the test to commence as soon as possible after the expiry of the relevant period.”
Following crop germination trials conducted by NIAB on behalf of Gafta, the Malting Barley Expert Group has considered the data regarding dormancy in respect of shipments of malting barley from England and Scotland (no data was available for crops grown in Ireland) and for contractual purposes the Committee has agreed that no extension of the dormancy period is required.
Tests for Germinative Energy carried out by the Association’s analysts are the AUBREY method prescribed in the Analytica of the European Brewery Convention (EBC).
Should the Association’s Analysts receive instructions to carry out tests by other methods, it will be the responsibility of the applicant to obtain the agreement of the other party to the contract.
The method of testing must be specified on the Certificate of Analysis.
