EU Parliament trade committee backs US tariff deal
See also GN circular 157/2025. The European Parliament’s International Trade Committee (INTA) voted by a large majority to approve legislation implementing the Turnberry accord with the United States, draft legislation, with 31 votes in favour, six against and three abstentions.
The proposal eliminates tariffs on US industrial goods and establishes duty-free quotas for a range of agricultural products.
In a second vote, 32 committee members also agreed to extend duty-free imports of US lobster until 31 July 2030, with six voting against and three abstaining.
Sunset clause and safeguards written in
The draft legislation agreed by the EU institutions includes a sunset clause of 31 December 2029, new criteria governing when the commission should suspend the legislation and a provision to revert to most-favoured-nation tariffs should the US breach the terms of the deal.
Next steps
Parliament is expected to vote on the two regulations on Tuesday 16 June. It will then be the turn of Council to approve the agreed texts.
Once formally approved by the EU co-legislators, the new legislation will enter into force on the day after its publication in the EU’s Official Journal.
