Coceral have shared some clarifications relating to GMO traits appearing as “expired” in the GMO register: https://ec.europa.eu/food/food-feed-portal/screen/gmo/search
Several GM soybean and maize traits appear as having “expired” on 23/4/2025 including soybean MON 87769, MON 87705, DP305423; Maize MON 87460, NK603, T25.
For example, in the EU Commission register Soybean MON 87769 appears as having ‘expired’ on 23/4/2025, but EFSA information shows 30/9/2025 to allow finalisation of the risk assessment. Example, Soybean MON 87708 appears as expired on 23/4/2025 and under the renewal process but no information is available on the EFSA website.
Clarification:
- MON 87769, MON 87705, DP305423, Maize MON 87460, NK603, T25, and MON 87708: although the validity date for their latest authorizations has expired, a request for renewal was submitted by the authorisation holders within the legal deadlines set by Articles 11(1) and 23(1) of Regulation (EC) No 1829/2003. Therefore, as specified by Article 11(4) and Article 23(4) of Regulation (EC) No 1829/2003, the authorization of these events is automatically extended until a decision on the renewal of their authorization is taken. The extension of risk assessment deadlines due to “additional data requests” does not impact the legal status of the traits, since their authorisation remains extended until the risk assessment process has concluded and a decision on the renewal of the authorization is taken.
- The case for BPS-CV127-9 trait is different as there was no request for renewal submitted and the event’s authorisation expired on 23/04/2025 so this trait is no longer authorised in the European Union.
