Collaborative governance for coordinated policy responses to emerging global food crises towards sustainable agriculture and food system transformation
The CFS bureau decided on the topics for 2025 meetings as follows:

    1. Financing, with particular emphasis on debt management at the end of March / early April 2025 (exact date to be confirmed) in Rome. The meeting outcomes/summary will feed into the CFS workstream's meeting on responsible investment and financing to take place in May 2025.
    2. Protracted crises and is set to occur in New York before CFS53 at a time still to be defined.

    Climate Macro Committee
The next milestone for the UNFCCC agricultural negotiations under the Sharm el-Sheikh Joint Work on Implementation of Climate Action on Agriculture and Food Security (SSJW) is the workshop titled "Systemic and Holistic Approaches to Implementation of Climate Action on Agriculture, Food Systems, and Food Security: Understanding, Cooperation, and Integration into Plans." This workshop will take place in Bonn in June 2025 during the SB62 session (16-26 June). Submissions to help shape the content and structure of the workshop are due by 1 March 2025. Both UNFCCC observer organizations and non-accredited organizations are encouraged to prepare and submit information to contribute to the workshop, via the UNFCCC submission portal.

The Brazilian government has appointed Ambassador André Corrêa do Lago as President and Ana Toni as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the 30th Conference of the Parties to the UNFCCC (COP30, Belém 10-21 November). Ambassador André Corrêa do Lago is a veteran diplomat and Brazil's chief negotiator at COP28 and COP29, with extensive expertise in energy, climate, and environmental diplomacy. Ana Toni is an economist with a PhD in political science, with experience in advocating for social justice and environmental sustainability through collaboration with the Institute for Climate and Society (iCS), and Greenpeace International, among others.

Urban - Peri Urban Macro Committee
Following the discussions at CFS 52 Plenary on the HLPE-FSN Report, "Strengthening Urban and Peri-Urban Food Systems to Achieve Food Security and Nutrition in the Context of Urbanization and Rural Transformation," the CFS policy convergence process officially kicked off on December 13 with the first Open-Ended Working Group (OEWG) meeting to help shape the Zero Draft of the Policy Recommendations. Participants shared key priorities and topics to be incorporated into the draft, ensuring it aligns with the Committee's previously developed focus areas. Looking ahead, the CFS Secretariat is set to release the Zero Draft in February, paving the way for further discussions at the next OEWG meeting on March 7th. Stay tuned for updates as this process unfolds!

    Food Systems Summit Committee
The FSS Coordination Hub has announced that the 2nd Food Systems Summit Stocktaking Moment (UNFSS+4) is scheduled to be held July 28-30 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. A draft concept note has been shared which identifies the objectives of the UNFSS+4 as:

    1. Documenting progress
    2. Strengthening accountability
    3. Unlocking investments

Two documents will provide the main evidence and foundation for the meeting's agenda, namely the UN Secretary-General's Stocktaking Report and an analysis sharing the perspective of a variety of food systems Non-State Actors.

The process will emphasize multi-stakeholder partnerships, public-private collaborations, and increased private sector engagement to institutionalize sustainable food systems governance while ensuring inclusivity, particularly for women, youth, smallholder farmers, and Indigenous Peoples. A key focus will be on corporate accountability, ensuring businesses commit to responsible and sustainable food systems transformation through a structured framework. The private sector is encouraged to stay engaged and contribute to this vital discussion on shaping accountable and transformative food systems.

The Global Forum on Food Security and Nutrition has announced a new call for submissions on "Use and application of the CFS framework for action for food security and nutrition in protracted crises (CFS-FFA)". This will be the basis for a Global Thematic Event (GTE) at CFS 53 to share experiences and take stock of the use and application of the CFS Framework for Action for Food Security and Nutrition in Protracted Crises (FFA). This will also contribute to monitoring progress in implementing the FFA at national, regional and global levels and draw lessons to improve CFS monitoring of the FFA.
This request, organized by the CFS Secretariat under the 2024-2027 Multi-year Programme of Work (MYPoW), is supported by PSM in the GTE planning process. Submissions are open until 15 April 2025; for assistance, contact fsn-moderator@fao.org.
