Lien

This module will provide a detailed understanding of what a lien is and who has the right to exercise a lien. The module will explain why and when a lien may become necessary, and how a lien works in practice.

By the end of this module, the learner should be able to:

• Explain what a lien is, including the requirements to exercise a lien, plus have a clear understanding of the timing of exercising a lien.
• Identify the rights associated with lien clauses, and explain the extent of the rights and to whom the rights belong. 
• Identify the ship owners' responsibilities when they exercise their right to lien the goods.
• Discuss the relationship between the charterparty and the bill of lading with regards to the right to exercise a lien.
• Discuss non-lien and Cesser clauses.
