PSM AGM
The PSM Chair and Secretariat are grateful to all members who are attending the AGM on July 2 in person and virtually. Bilateral meetings will be held with Mr. Vincent Martin, FAO's Director of Innovation, Mr. Vicente Amaral Bezerra, Alternate Permanent Representative of Brazil to FAO, and Ms. Laura Delamonica, Deputy Coordinator General for Food and Nutrition Security at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Brazil. Of course the time with H.E. Nosipho Nausca-Jean Jezile, Chair of CFS; and Ms. Adriana Herrera Moreno, CFS Secretary allows PSM to raise its key issues.
Updates will include PSM's 2025 workplan including the negotiations on Strengthening Urban and Peri-Urban Food Systems, CFS53 Update and Preparation, UNFCCC Climate, World Food Forum, negotiations and preparations for the 2025 UN High Level Meeting on NCDs and the Food System Summit +4 Stocktake. The PSM Position Paper on Resilient Food Systems will also be adopted.
We also wish to extend our gratitude to Rabobank for sponsoring the upcoming cocktail reception on July 2.
This AGM also will mark the last formal role for Emerging ag as secretariat for IAFN. It has been a wonderful collaboration, and Emerging ag will continue to assist through the end of 2025, with the climate work, nutrition committee, resilience and urban-peri urban projects. Emerging ag offers their thanks for the engagement, contribution and support of the PSM and IAFN and wishes everyone well. IAFN is currently making new arrangements for the secretariat and will make an announcement over the summer.
FAO Global Agrifood Biotechnologies Conference
As part of its 80th Anniversary, FAO hosted the first Global Agrifood Biotechnologies Conference (16-18 June) in Rome. Under the theme "Biotechnologies for a Sustainable Future: Driving Agrifood Systems Transformation," the conference provided a key platform to highlight advancements in biotechnologies and their potential to drive inclusive, resilient, and sustainable agrifood systems. Notably, private sector participation reached a record high, with ten private sector-nominated speakers contributing insights on scaling innovations and fostering public-private collaboration. The event concluded with a Call for Action and a commitment to updating FAO's Statement on Biotechnology, building momentum for future dialogues at the FAO Science & Innovation Forum on 14 October 2025, as part of FAO's 80th Anniversary Celebrations (with the anniversary day itself on 13 October 2025).

Urban - Peri Urban Macro Committee Update
The 1st round of negotiations concluded on June 6th and the 2nd round of negotiations will take place July 8-11th and, if needed, on July 21st, that will result in an agreed text which will then be presented at CFS Plenary on Wednesday October 22nd (am). PSM included text, currently agreed, includes recognition of the 'diverse contributions of each production model'; paragraph 6, the need for 'product aggregation'; positive & negative implications of trade; the establishment of muti-stakeholder platforms & networks'; the need for 'cooling' infrastructure & recognition of trade networks; and the need for partnerships & collaboration with business groups.
Climate Macro Committee
At UNFCCC SB62, the most relevant negotiations for agriculture focused primarily on the Global Goal on Adaptation (GGA) and the Sharm el-Sheikh Joint Work on Agriculture and Food Security. Discussions under the GGA addressed options to streamline over 490 proposed indicators, with the main substantive divergences emerging around indicators related to means of implementation, particularly finance. On agriculture, an in-session workshop explored systemic and holistic approaches to climate action in food systems, followed by negotiations on the future of the joint work, including the design of future synthesis reports, improvements to the online portal, and assessment of the workshop format. Limited funding to implement the joint work was flagged as a persistent challenge. Notably, Brazil's Action Agenda, presented during the session, highlighted agriculture and food systems as a key focus area for implementing the outcomes of the Global Stocktake. A report on the SB62 discussions has been prepared for PSM and includes more detailed outcomes of the negotiations.
