Cargo Claims

Cargo carriage sometimes gives rise to problems that require resolution of complex legal relations between the carriers, their P&I Clubs, cargo interests, charterers, cargo insurers and banks. This module explains these legal relationships and the obligations and liabilities of each party involved.

By the end of this module, the learner should be able to:

• Analyse the different types of cargo claims
• Explain who can make a cargo claim and discuss the steps required to pursue a claim
• Discuss the legal framework governing cargo claims
• Identify any time limits in relation to cargo claims
• Explain why security from the carrier is good practice, and discuss  the different forms of security
• Discuss insurance coverage and any limitations
